The YOD configuration - all about it.

Detail of "The Creation of Abram", by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1512)

The Yod scheme is a configuration between at least three planets or points in the horoscope, that create a long triangle that resembles a witch hat. The Yod is also called "the Finger of Destiny", "the Finger of God" or "the Triangle of Projection", and it has been the cause of a lot of debates and controversies within the astrological community.

A Yod is an isosceles triangle that's formed when two planets are in a sextile (60° aspect) and both simultaneously create a close inconjunct or quincunx (150° aspect) to a third planet (2° to 2.5° maximum orb). The third planet is the apex planet.

Traditional astrologers have dismissed Yod astrology. They consider it "false" or simply a midpoint structure, and even among those who value the Yod there is debate about whether to include only planets or other points in the chart such as the Ascendant. I strongly believe that Yod astrology is very meaningful, it is a very fairy-like pattern denoting a special mission or destiny in life.

Yod is the 10th Hebrew letter, with a kabbalistic and mystical meaning regarding God's name, his omnipresence and our humility.

This pattern creates a particular and strong energy, it is a unique structure that contains a special kind of energy that took a long time to create. A person with a Yod will have a hard time with this bubbly and neurotic energy, especially earlier in life.

The energy of the two sextile planets is focused like a laser beam on the point of action. A sextile is a positive aspect that creates energy. The quincunx take this heightened energy and further increase the vibration. Initially, the most negative potential of the sextile aspect manifests itself through the apex planet. So the apex planet is under incredible stress and strain, and has to release it somehow. Individuals with a Yod pattern will experience it as a continuous build-up of tension.

Life with a Yod is anything but ordinary, due to the fact that the Yod represents a task or a special mission in life that the person feels obliged to undertake.

I think Yod astrology is very challenging, because there will be many difficult circumstances and relationships in life that seem to show a recurring theme, as if we are learning a lesson over and over to perfect something. I believe a person with a Yod has worked on a special task or mission for many lifetimes, making mistakes along the way while learning all the necessary skills to pursue it.

Having a Yod in the chart for this life means this is the life to bring everything together, make up for mistakes and pay off the karmic debt. In this life, skills must be perfected and used in a constructive and selfless way of benefit others. The abilities are shown by the sextile planets, the challenges through the quincunx, and the mission or task through the apex planet. The quincunx is one aspect of the karmic readjustment.

As with all closed configurations in a horoscope, a Yod needs activation. A Yod's activation point is the mid-point between the planets in the sextile aspect. As an example, say your Sun at 15° Gemini is sextile Saturn at 15° Aries, and both are quincunx the Moon at 15° Scorpio. This Yod's activation point would be the exact middle between the Gemini Sun and Saturn in Aries, or 15° Taurus. This sign and degree are considered the spot that adds an essential element that's missing and is integral for connecting the apex planet to its supporting base.

For a Yod to work positively, a certain evolutionary standard must first be met. The timing of this evolutionary leap, or series of leaps, will be shown by aspects, especially the conjunctions to the apex planet from the eclipses and transits of the outer planet.

With a Yod in our chart, we need to develop a great sense of individuality and self-confidence. In relating to others Yod's owners will explore realms of experience that are not understood on an ordinary level, as they will include patterns of collective unconscious behavior. He or she will have to meet internal standards rather than conform to social standards of behavior. For this reason, the person will usually set in motion misunderstandings and aggressive responses from the environment.

When a Yod starts to be perceived, the person feels like arriving at a crossroad and having to pick one direction, without knowing where it will lead. So the activation of the Yod will cause the abandonment, or psychologically letting go, of certain interests and habits to become involved in what is showing on the horizon. If you take a different direction than the one the universe choose for you, then the it will not be kind to you. The further you stray from the intended path, the more painful the kick.

  1. Another magnetizing post, and thank you for your work and putting together. Interestingly enough, this was one area in Astrology that I had a very little knowledge, up until now :) I had a very little knowledge about it; maybe, YOD wasn’t bestowed upon everyone, as a gift at Birth.

Your analysis of this subject from different perspectives, (i.e. at every stage of a person’s life), gave me very good insight about YOD. Well Done!
